Roland is God.

Garrett Chow gave me the heads up on this one. God, I wish I had filmed some of our classes with him. To this day I've not seen so many adults gutted, crushed and brought to tears as in his classroom. He seems to have mellowed considerably with age. Good lookin' out G.

I was a drawing major too. My "Rowland" was Sam Wilson at the University of Utah. He said I was average for three semesters, then one day we were looking at a drawing of mine in the hallway. After a long, LONG pause, he signed really loudly and said, "When are you going to just get pissed off enough to get better?"
He made me question my major at first. By the time I graduated, he was my hero and I got my picture with him in my cap and gown. Hats off to Rowland and Sam and everyone else brave enough to tell us how it is so that we get better ever day of our lives.

On a side note, Ragnar, I love your stuff. Great shape and color. I'll be back time and again.

Wow. He's tough but not mean. I like that. Students need to be pushed to realize what it takes to succeed in the art world. I wish I'd have had a little more of that from my professors when I was in art school.

Professor Roland is off the chain. I really like him. He reminds me of instructors that I had in college.

hes a bit rude..there are better ways of teaching. He probably discouraged alot od students...

He really drives it in. I honestly felt inspired. Too me it is really a tough love of the artists we aim to be and a kick in the pants to the artists we are scared to be.

He totally failed as a teacher. Instead of wasting 10mins talking about how bad the new students are, how about inspiring the students to be as good as him (if he is). If his students are not as good as him at the end of the semester, he failed. It's easy to put students down and tell them that they are average.

I am laughing my S off. I had Roland way back in 85. I would have done this in many ACCD classes, but there was no digital video then. Believe it or not I miss the crits. Roland was a straight shooter and honestly presented his opinions. You didn't have to agree, but it definitely provided a starting point for discussions. What I remember was his fingers. He had huge finger tips, almost pads. I had a friend who referred to him as 'tree frog'.

WOW true story! The fingers man, ohh so true. I shared many out-takes of Roland with Ragnar back in 1994 (ACCD). At the time we shared many reenactments of the pod suction like fingered instructor. Man so so so flippin funny!! Garrett Chow shared this with me as well. I was in stitches.
